ICSL Response to COVID-19
Due to the "Stay at Home" order by Governor De Santis, ICSL made the hard decision to temporarily suspend operation of the food pantry effective April 13, 2020. We take the health of our volunteers, staff and clients seriously.
To prepare for this, March 23rd, ICSL began distributing extra food to the clients from what they normally receive. We still have some food on the pantry shelves but it will soon be gone. We plan to distribute food Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday week of April 5th.
In an effort to continue to help our clients we have handed out information packets with resources available to everyone who comes by for food. In the packet is a list of the Harry Chapin Food Bank mobile pantries as well as the ones held by Community Cooperative. Also included is a list of the schools and bus stops in our area where meals for children are being distributed.
Food stamp recipients are receiving major increases on their cards. Many of our client’s that didn’t qualify before will now qualify for the SNAP Program. In the packet we have the information, in English and Spanish, for signing up online as well as paper applications for those that cannot use the internet. We have done the same with the unemployment applications.
Thinking of what is ahead for our clients. Florida is tourism driven. Our clients rely on jobs created by restaurants, hotels, retail stores and other “vacation” type jobs. We know that as the rest of the US is also trying to get back on their feet, vacations will not be a priority. That will leave many of our clients in financial trouble they will not be able to see their way out.
FPL is not turning off electric due to unpaid bills. Some mortgages are being deferred. Foreclosures and evictions are delayed. That doesn’t mean those bills are not owed. Once the immediate crisis is past those bills will be due. Our clients will need us more than ever then.
On behalf of the Board and Staff, I want to thank everyone for your support of ICSL and our ministries. I am confident that we will come out on the other side of this crisis stronger.
